WebFeb 21, 2024 · A fort was constructed on the site in 1854 and the U.S. Army patrolled the area as more people traveled the route to California. After the Civil War, Fort Davis was reinstated and expanded starting in 1867. In 1891, the fort was abandoned. In 1961 it was authorized as a National Park site.
